Hitch classes, types, and weight distribution — explained

Every hitch component has its own rating. The weakest link limits the entire system. Here's how to match the right hitch to your trailer and understand when a weight-distributing system is required.

Hitch classes — the receiver rating system

Receiver hitches are classified by their maximum trailer weight (GTW) and maximum tongue weight (TW). The class tells you the hitch's structural rating — but you must also verify that the receiver, ball mount, hitch ball, and coupler are all rated to match. Every component in the chain must be rated to the load.

Weight-distributing upgrade

Class III and IV hitches are rated higher when used with a weight-distributing (WD) system. A Class III hitch rated to 8,000 lb GTW weight-carrying may be rated to 14,000 lb GTW with a weight-distributing head — but only if the tow vehicle is also rated for that load. Always check both the hitch and the vehicle ratings.

The standard receiver-and-ball setup found on most tow vehicles. The trailer's coupler locks onto the hitch ball; the tongue weight transfers directly to the TV's rear axle. No load redistribution occurs — all tongue weight lands on the rear axle and lifts the front axle proportionally. Works well for lighter trailers (typically under 5,000–6,000 lb GTW) where tongue weight remains manageable.

A WD hitch uses spring bars (also called tension arms) attached between the head and the trailer's A-frame to redistribute tongue weight forward onto the TV's front axle and back onto the trailer's axles. The result is a more level, stable tow — the TV's front axle is less unloaded, steering response is better, and braking is more predictable. Most manufacturers require a WD hitch when trailer GTW exceeds 50% of the TV's curb weight, or when tongue weight exceeds the TV's specified tongue weight limit — whichever comes first.

Fifth wheel trailers
Mounts in the truck bed over or just ahead of the rear axle. The trailer's kingpin locks into a jaw on the hitch plate. The coupling point is farther forward than a ball hitch, which gives the trailer less leverage on the rear axle and makes for a more stable, forgiving tow — especially with longer, heavier trailers. Pin weight (15–25% of GTW) loads into the truck bed and rear axle. Requires a compatible pickup truck with a bed at least 6.5 ft long for most applications; shorter beds may require a slider hitch to allow sharp turns without the trailer contacting the cab.

Gooseneck hitch

A ball-in-bed hitch where the trailer's gooseneck neck curves down into the truck bed and couples to a ball mounted over the rear axle. Higher weight ratings than fifth wheel for equivalent truck size, and the coupling point is directly over the axle for maximum load transfer efficiency. Less common in the recreational RV market; dominant in horse trailer and heavy commercial trailer use. Typically requires a dedicated gooseneck ball and safety chain anchors installed in the truck bed — cannot share a fifth wheel plate.

Anti-sway systems

Trailer sway is a side-to-side oscillation that, if uncorrected, can amplify to the point of loss of control. It's caused by aerodynamic forces (crosswind, passing trucks), road imperfections, or a trailer that's too long or too heavy for the tow vehicle. Anti-sway systems reduce the onset and severity of sway — but they don't eliminate the underlying physics. A trailer that exceeds your TV's wheelbase guideline is inherently less stable regardless of what sway control is fitted.

Friction sway control

A friction bar connects the trailer's A-frame to the hitch head at an angle. Resistance in the bar dampens lateral movement. Effective at low sway levels; less effective once significant sway begins. Inexpensive and common on older WD setups. Works with a separate WD head.

Integrated sway control (cam/bar type)

Built into the WD head itself. The spring bars create tension that resists both weight transfer and lateral movement simultaneously. More effective than separate friction bars and eliminates the separate sway bar. Brands like Equal-i-zer, Andersen, Blue Ox Sway Pro use this approach.

Electronic sway control

The tow vehicle's stability control system or a dedicated trailer brake controller detects sway and applies the trailer brakes on the swaying side to straighten it. Works at higher sway levels than mechanical systems. Requires electric trailer brakes. Most effective as a last resort — a well-set-up rig with correct tongue weight rarely activates it.

Sway control is not a fix for overloading

Anti-sway bars and electronic sway control reduce the symptom of a trailer that's too long or too heavy for the tow vehicle. They don't address the underlying physics. If your trailer consistently triggers sway control or requires heavy correction, check that tongue weight is 10–15% of GTW, trailer load is balanced slightly forward of center, and the trailer length is within your TV's wheelbase guideline.

When is a weight-distributing hitch required?
